Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp are situated on Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve. This area has been deemed to have the best wildlife in all Africa by some experts, and it certainly ranks amongst the best in Botswana. It is one of those rare areas where there seems to always be animals in sight.
Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp first gained fame for their diversity of predators but in recent times lions have become so dense that African wild dogs and cheetah are now sighted infrequently. Leopard remain a common sight around the Mombo Camps, including a female known as Legadima who was featured in the National Geographic film “Eye of the Leopard” by Dereck and Beverly Joubert. Chief’s Island is the relocation site of white and black rhino, providing Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp access to one of the only locations in Botswana where a rhino sighting is possible.
Activities from Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp are limited to game drives or sitting inside of photographic hides. Due to the Mombo camps being located within the Moremi Game Reserve night drives and walks are not allowed.
Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp share a location and are attached by a raised walkway. Accommodation is the same at each camp but main camp has nine tents, while Little Mombo has just three tents. Each camp dines and operates from its own lounge area.
Tents are exquisite, raised up to two metres off the ground, with both Mombo camps providing breathtaking views over the plains. The long veranda extends to a private sala day bed area all taking advantage of the vistas. Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp Bathrooms are en-suite, with indoor and outdoor showers. The main living and dining area at Mombo Camp and Little Mombo camp is under thatch, there is a boma for delicious dinners under the stars and a plunge pool to relax in on a hot day.
Large concentrations of plains game occur in front of Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp and guests may view a variety of animals without even leaving the veranda. One often finds animals wandering past, sometimes right under the rooms, in fact while staying at Mombo Camp, I had buffalo that would sleep under my tent.
With all the accolades, Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp prices have risen to the top for a Botswana camp. For those willing to pay whatever it takes to visit the best wildlife areas or in search of the most luxurious surrounds the Mombo Camps make great choice.
