Why, in this case, are the males hunting? I thought females usually do that.

This particular trio of males are very good hunters of buffalo. Early lion research was all done in the open plains systems of East Africa and there the lions tend to focus on wildebeest and zebra where stalking is important and more difficult for large, conspicous males to be successful so they often sit out the hunt. That has led to the incorrect statement that females do all the hunting.

In Southern Africa many prides specialize in larger prey such as buffalo and in such cases brute force is often more important than stealthy approach so the males often participate and can certainly hunt on their own. The simplistic females do all the hunting philosophy also overlooks that males are evicted from their prides, usually at around 2 1/2 years of age and then they have to make it on their own for a couple years as nomads until they challenge and eventually win a pride of there own. Certainly lions are master scavengers but during these couple of years with no company of females these males have to do their own hunting.
