My Mara Plains Camp review is a four part blog post. This is the last blog entry for Mara Plains - where I cover Camp Management. All of the Mara Plains Camp blog entries can be accessed below:
Mara Plains Camp Management
The manager Sean was an old school safari guy with deep roots in the Kenya bush over many generations in his family. He really set the tone for the camp with a total dedication to game viewing. From the orientation at the start his goal was to keep us out in the bush and make the camp work around our schedule – brilliant!
Sounds simple but it is not what happens at many safari camps. A perfect example, we were only ten minutes into our game drive when we found a leopard in a tree. It was only 3:30, we certainly did not want to risk losing this leopard but the odds were she would stay in the tree for a couple more hours and in the distance we could see elephants and buffalo. Phil called Sean and with ten minutes he was there to babysit our leopard. We went and enjoyed the other animals for an hour and then returned to observe the leopard for the next couple hours. All the little things like always having new bottles of water in the tent were taken care of, everything ran as smooth as can be.
Unfortunately we were amongst the last guests with Sean as the Manager. There is now a new management couple, Chris and Rachael who have considerable experience managing safari camps in Kenya. I have heard good things but because the camp philosophy was an essential component for me loving this camp so much I will be watching to make sure it maintains that special flavor.
