********** NOTE: UPDATED APRIL 23, 2009 This is the original preview post for the Lion Army National Geographic Special. I have since provided a Lion Army: Battle to Survive recap blog post. This updated post provides a review and insight into the program as well as great related viewing from earlier lion specials. **********
Saturday at 8pm ET on the National Geographic Channel, I'll be tuning in to "Lion Army: Battle to Survive". This is part of the "Wild" series on National Geographic. I have previewed some of the videos from the National Geographic Website and embedded them in this blogpost. It looks like it should be a pretty good special based on what I've been able to view so far.
The official Show Description from National Geographic: "It's a wild family drama in Kruger National Park: 28 members, including teenage bullies, new babies, absentee fathers and sick relatives and dynamics changing every day. Only this family is a mega lion pride."
VIDEO 1: Lion Army Giraffe Ambush
A lioness directs a giraffe into a pack of waiting juvenilles who are to pull off an ambush. The juvenille lions are still learning how to execute a successful hunt and the ambush doesn't exactly go as planned.
VIDEO 2: Lion Army Divided
This is quite possibly my favorite video of the three. After a show of dominance at a kill, 3 young males are forced out of the pride. The juvenilles are effectively kicked out of the house and forced into being nomadic males. They make their way mostly by scavenging on the periphery of the Lion Army.
VIDEO 3: Lion Army Cape Buffalo Kill
I kind of ruined any suspense on this one with the title, but the Lion Army successfully tracks down and kills an African Cape Buffalo - providing a bountiful meal for all pride members.
I'm pretty excited to watch the special, and I'm sure I'll have more to add in a new blog post (which I'll link to from this one) - after Saturday. Enjoy the show!
