African Wild Dog
Summary
This is a species that many first time safari goers are not aware of but it is one the most sought out animals by experienced safari travelers. This species is very active, gregarious, and fascinating making it many guides (including our biologist) favorite species to find and observe. This is a highly endangered species and because it ranges over wide areas it is also one of the most difficult species to plan to see. During the denning season the pack becomes tied to a fixed location and this is the opportunity to utilize for anyone that is seriously planning to try and find this species. Outside of the denning season the best strategy is to go in known regular use areas and hope you get lucky.

Best Places
Northern Botswana remains the best geographic area for finding and observing wild dogs in a wilderness setting. We keep tabs on numerous denning locations and the best camps to observe them from.
Other Areas of Note
The fenced Madikwe Reserve is known for it’s wild dog sightings. Packs in Zambia’s South Luangwa and Kafue have become more frequently spotted over the last few years. The Selous region of Tanzania and the Niassa Reserve of Mozambique have some of the largest populations but the areas are large as well with limited tourism access making sightings unreliable. Hwange in Zimbabwe is known for having good sightings. Samburu area of Kenya. Other areas are hit and miss and can become outstanding for a couple of months if a pack shows up to den.
Something Extra
Our predator/livestock conflict research program at the Grassland Bushman Lodge houses a number of rescued wild dogs that range in an 11 hectare enclosure. Guests at the Lodge are able to learn about the ongoing research and conservation effort as well as walk in with the wild dogs.
