Lower Zambezi National Park

Lower Zambezi National Park is a thrilling place to safari due to the stunning environment and variety of safari activities. The Zambezi River is the draw at Lower Zambezi National Park as large quantities of animals come to the water in the dry season. The river can be explored by both boat and canoe to get a great new perspective of the wildlife. Fishing is tremendous at Lower Zambezi National Park. The rich Zambezi has also produced the growth of towering woodlands that are open and ideal for walking and game driving in a different environment than most other safari locations. Night drives are also possible in Lower Zambezi National Park creating the opportunity to see the full diversity of wildlife and increasing the chances of seeing active predators on the hunt.

Lower Zambezi National Park Wading Elephant

The majority of Lower Zambezi National Park is thick woodlands going up and on top of escarpments where game viewing is tough but fortunately the river is a magnet during the dry season that results in an outstanding game viewing area. Due to that dynamic we consider Lower Zambezi National Park a dry season park only and recommend it from July through October with it becoming progressively better quality as the dates move toward October. About ½ of the camps in this area are outside of the Lower Zambezi National Park residing in the Chiawa Game Management Area but the game viewing is much better inside the National Park. Those camps outside the park will enter on the west side so we also prefer the more remote camps in the eastern portion of the park where there tends to be the best game viewing but also very few vehicles to maximize quality of the experience.

Lower Zambezi National Park Leopard in Tree

Lower Zambezi National Park is another park that is outstanding for leopards and the river draws large numbers of elephants, buffalo, hippo, and crocs. Utilizing the boating opportunities these species can be seen from a different perspective and it can be a very adventurous way to explore the Zambian wild.
