Gabon Safaris Overview

Gabon has emerged as a beacon in West Africa with a stable government since becoming independent from France in 1960. In 2002 Gabon set a new standard by forming 12 National Parks encompassing over 29,000 sq. km. of area, more than 11% of the total country. This is the second highest percentage of national park lands in the world to Costa Rica but of course the volume protected far exceeds that of Costa Rica.

Tourism infrastructure is not nearly as developed or smooth as longer standing safari areas in East and Southern Africa, thus this destination is recommended for experienced safari goers or those who have a history of adventure travel in other out of the way locales around the world. For those who can be tolerant of a few kinks and are comfortable in moderate rustic accommodation the reward is unbelievable as a diverse wealth of wildlife and habitats will unfold in front of you. See our Wild Places section for more details on a Gabon safari.
