Put Your Africa Experiences to Words: Safari Travel Journaling

Monday, 16 February 2009 08:42 by BillGiven

For many safari goers Hemmingway style means more than vintage canvas tents and the perfect gin and tonic, it means a rare foray into writing to try and capture the essence of their own experiences. It makes sense. Safari can be a profound journey of discovery and capturing the moments and emotions in words is one of the best ways to savor the journey both at the time of writing and again whenever you want in the future. An unusual few seem satisfied with their writing efforts, most of my clients return disappointed in their journaling with a common litany of issues. Often the culprit is over writing the details and thus falling two, three, then four days behind to where the experiences have piled up too long and then the person submits to making haphazard notes or outright gives up. Another problem is that journaling becomes a duty rather than an enjoyable enhancing activity and can actually cause one to miss their relax time.

Travel Journaling - Globejotter
Globejotting Can Help You With Your Travel Entries

Enter help! I recently read Globejotting: How to Write Extraordinary Travel Journals (and still have time to enjoy your trip!) by award-winning travel humorist Dave Fox. This is the pre-trip resource needed for those excited to keep a Safari Journal. The advice is practical, the read is highly entertaining, and the author includes his own travel stories, which help the book flow and clearly illustrate the journaling strategies. Here is where you can find Dave’s great travel journal techniques. Dave Fox also has a very active travel humor website featuring his writings.

With so many special interest safaris available I am surprised that I cannot find anyone currently offering a safari focused on writing. I have reached out to Dave Fox and together we are going to co-lead a Travel Journaling safari to Botswana. We are still working through the details but I am very excited to offer this opportunity. Botswana is ideal since the typical safari flow includes early morning activities and then a few hours of downtime before the second activity of the day. This time in camp is perfect for Dave to teach writing workshops at a relaxed pace. I will announce official details when finalized but please email me if you have interest in joining this special safari.

Dave's one of our favorite Inkwater authors. Not only does he know his stuff, he's an all-out nice guy. We enjoy hearing his tales of overseas adventures whenever he's in Portland. It's rare to find a great writer, an experienced travel guide, and a healthy sense of humor in one human being-- and Dave brings all this and more.

Another Inkwater Press book your readers might enjoy tells the story of one VERY extended safari. This story is so rare that Ripley's Believe It Or Not recently featured it on their site. The book is "Africa Trek," and it tells the story of Alexandre and Sonia Poussin, who walked the entire length of Africa in a span of three years. "Africa Trek" is great off-season reading for any Safarista. It provides an honest, unfiltered view of African life from the ground up.

Thanks Colleen, I definitely agree with your assessment of Dave and I'm looking forward to teaming up with him to lead a safari.

Africa Trek looks very interesting and I will have to add it to my reading list, I'm sure many of my safari readers would find it a fascinating read.

I have been reading your blog posts during my smoke break, and I have to admit the whole article has been very informative and very well composed. I thought I would let you know that for some reason this blog does not display well in IE 8. I wish Microsoft would stop upgrading their software. I have a question for you. Do you mind swapping blog roll links? That would be really neat!
