Denning African Wild Dog Pups

The African wild dog is highly endangered and because of it’s wide ranging ways it is one of the most difficult species to observe on safari. Each year when the pack dens to have their puppies they become tied to a fixed point creating a time when they can be readily observed. The wild dogs are a tremendous species to view because they are so active and sociable there is much to see, and this is heightened with the presence of puppies. They are the most successful hunters in the world and knowing where the pack is allows opportunities to attempt to follow on their hunts. It is also fascinating to witness the begging behavior as the pack returns to the den to feed the puppies and the attendant mother, or other ‘baby sitter.’ For those who have a desire to observe the social interaction between individuals this is a premier opportunity.

This is also an experience that cannot be as certain as gorilla trekking or even observing the migration as wild dogs may or may not den at the same location on an annual basis. However, we keep track of areas that have a history of successful denning and can plan with a good strategy to make this experience a reality.
